一、按光的传播模式可以分为:单模和多模。
单模光纤(SMF Single Mode Fibre)的纤芯直径很小,在给定的工作波长上只能以单一模式传输,传输频带宽,传输容量大。光信号可以沿着光纤的轴向传播,因此光信号的损耗很小,离散也很小,传播的距离较远。单模光纤P M D规范建议芯径为8 ~ 1 0 μ m , 包括包层直径为1 2 5 μ m 。多模光纤(MMF Multi Mode Fibre)是在给定的工作波长上,能以多个模式同时传输的光纤。多模光纤的纤芯直径一般为5 0至2 0 0 μ m ,而包层直径的变化范围为1 2 5到2 3 0 μ m ,计算机网络用纤芯直径为6 2 . 5 μ m ,包层为1 2 5 μ m ,也就是通常所说的6 2 . 5 μ m 。与单模光纤相比,多模光纤的传输性能要差。在导入波长上分单模1 3 1 0 n m、1 5 5 0 n m;多模8 5 0 n m、1 3 0 0 n m。

二、按折射率分:跳变式光纤和渐变式光纤。
跳变式光纤纤芯的折射率和保护层的折射率都是常数。在纤芯和保护层的交界面折射率呈阶梯型变化。渐变式光纤纤芯的折射率随着半径的增加而按一定规律减小,到纤芯与保护层交界处减小为保护层的折射率。纤芯的折射率的变化是近似抛物线型。
