Youth is not atime of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, redlips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination,a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a tempera-mentalpredominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over thelove of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobodygrows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinklethe skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear,self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.
Whether 60 or16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailingchildlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In thecenter of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as itreceives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and fromthe Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerialsare down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice ofpessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials areup, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

Though there is muchto be concerned about, there is far, far more for which to be thankful. Thoughlife’s goodness can at times be overshadowed, it is never outweighed.
For every singleact that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quiet actsof love, kindness and compassion. For every person who seeks to hurt, there aremany, many more who devote their lives to helping and to healing.
There is goodness to life that cannot be denied.
In the mostmagnificent vistas and in the smallest details, look closely, for that goodnessalways comes shining through.
There is no limitto the goodness of life. It grows more abundant with each new encounter. Themore you experience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there is to belived.
Even when thecold winds blow and the world seems to be covered in foggy shadows, thegoodness of life lives on. Open your eyes, open your heart, and you will seethat goodness is everywhere.
Though thegoodness of life seems at times to suffer setbacks, it always endures. For inthe darkest moment it becomes vividly clear that life is a priceless treasure. Andso the goodness of life is made even stronger by the very things that wouldoppose it.
Time and timeagain when you feared it was gone forever you found that the goodness of life wasreally only a moment away. Around the next corner, inside every moment, thegoodness of life is there to surprise and delight you.
Take a moment tolet the goodness of life touch your spirit and calm your thoughts. Then, share yourgood fortune with another. For the goodness of life grows more and moremagnificent each time it is given away.
Though the problemsconstantly scream for attention and the conflicts appear to rage ever stronger,the goodness of life grows stronger still, quietly, peacefully, with morepurpose and meaning than ever before.
生命的美好

If I Rest, I Rust
The significant inscriptionfound on an old key---“If I rest, I rust”---would be an excellent motto forthose who are afflicted with the slightest bit of idleness. Even the mostindustrious person might adopt it with advantage to serve as a reminder that,if one allows his faculties to rest, like the iron in the unused key, they willsoon show signs of rust and, ultimately, cannot do the work required of them.
Those who would attainthe heights reached and kept by great men must keep their faculties polished byconstant use, so that they may unlock the doors of knowledge, the gate that guardthe entrances to the professions, to science, art, literature, agriculture---everydepartment of human endeavor.
Industry keeps brightthe key that opens the treasury of achievement. If Hugh Miller, after toiling allday in a quarry, had devoted his evenings to rest and recreation, he wouldnever have become a famous geologist. The celebrated mathematician, EdmundStone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found thekey to science of mathematics, if he had given his spare moments to idleness, hadthe little Scotch lad, Ferguson, allowed the busy brain to go to sleep while hetended sheep on the hillside instead of calculating the position of the starsby a string of beads, he would never have become a famous astronomer.
Labor vanquishesall---not inconstant, spasmodic, or ill-directed labor; but faithful,unremitting, daily effort toward a well-directed purpose. Just as truly aseternal vigilance is the price of liberty, so is eternal industry the price ofnoble and enduring success.
